Fnugg Blue with UH Wind Ensemble

February 12, 2013 By T. J.

I will be performing “Fnugg Blue” with the University of Hawaii Wind Ensemble this month on Maui and Oahu. For those who are not familiar, Fnugg is a Nordic word that means “something so light as to be almost weightless – like a snowflake.” Yep, that’s me and my tuba! It is a seriously fun piece that mixes Norwegian folk song, Aboriginal Didgeridoo technique, and Funk. I’ll be playing multiphonics (two notes at once), lip beat (think beat boxing on the tuba), and up and down the full range of the instrument (more than four octaves)!

We’ll be performing a concert on Maui at Baldwin Auditorium at 4p on Sunday February 17th. We’ll be doing clinics with Baldwin High School during the day.

The following week, we’ll be back on Oahu performing at McKinley High School at 4p on Sunday, February 24th. Here is the UH event calendar

I’ll be playing on my five-valve Yamaha Eb tuba:

Teaching at Punahou School

November 4, 2012 By T. J.

I am now teaching Junior High and High School tuba and euphonium lessons at Punahou School. Please note that you DO NOT have to be attending Punhou School to have lessons through their music program. My profile can be found here. My lovely wife Sara is also teaching at Punahou as the new oboe instructor.

This is a great way to make private lessons “official,” so there is a record that can be included with collegiate applications and an easy way to be associated with this prestigious institution (the president went here!).
